LOCAL HERITAGE SERVICE ~
EAST END SCHOOL
Situated in Institution Road, Elgin, East End School was designed by Aberdeen architect Archibald Simpson and built as part of the Anderson's Institute provision between 1830 and 1833.

These historic school premisies are being used as temporary accommodation for the local Heritage Service.

There is a 48 hour request sertvice in respect of archives and local plans.

Monday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday 10.00am - 5.00pm.
Tuesday 10.00am - 8.00pm.
Saturday 10.00am - 12noon.
Wednesday - October to April - Closed.

Archives
Letter books, court cases, deeds, burgh records, kirk session records, customs and excise records, school records and parochial board records are just some of the archival materials that offer an excellent record of the way of life in Moray from the 13th century to today!

Architects' Plans
The Wittet Collection of 15,000 architects’ plans covers the period from the early 19th century to 1960 and includes churches, farms, shops, houses etc.
The Doig Collection of distillery plans covers the major wave of expansion during the 1890s and is of national importance.

Books and Pamphlets
14,000 books and pamphlets tell the story of Moray and its people. The collection seeks to hold every book published about Moray and by Moray authors. In addition to publications of local interest, there is a selection of more general books on Scotland. All libraries hold local heritage books for borrowing.

Genealogical Records
The Local Heritage Service can help you research your family tree, through its collection of genealogical and family history records. Sets of the census records (1841-1901), old Parish Registers (prior to 1855) of baptisms, marriages and deaths and gravestone inscriptions are just some of the sources available.

Look up copies of all local newspapers from 1827 to the present day! The collection includes the Banffshire Advertiser, Banffshire Herald, Banffshire Journal, Dufftown News, Elgin Courant, Elgin Courier, Forres Gazette, Northern Scot, Aberdeen Journal and others!

Photographs
Over 20,000 photographs and slides give a vital picture of Moray’s people, places and way of life from 1870 to the present day. There is also an index to illustrations in local books and newspapers.

Old Photographs

Maps
The collection of over 16,000 maps includes Ordnance Survey scales from the 1870s, as well as eighteenth century county maps and estate plans. Place names on maps have been extensively indexed.
