The Youth Sports Development Department of the Moray Council, in conjunction with the New Opportunities Fund, has organised the next Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) to take place in Moray.
The CSLA will take place at Elgin Community Centre on Saturday 23rd April, Sunday 24th April, Sunday 8th May, Saturday 14th May and Sunday 22nd May, although the last day will depend on the numbers and ability of the group.
Each day will run from 9.00am - 4.00pm and attendance at all sessions will be compulsory. Last year over 30,000 people in the UK took part in a Community Sports Leader Award. By achieving this nationally recognised qualification, Award holders have developed vital skills for life and made a real difference to their local communities. The Award involves developing competence in organisational and planning skills, motivation of others, effective communication and teamworking. The CSLA can be a stepping stone to employment, further education or volunteering in the community.
The Award is fun and practical with no qualifications required, or exams to sit. Candidates don’t need to be sporting superstars - anyone aged 16 or over can get involved. Some ‘get up and go’ and an interest in helping others are all that is needed to get the most out of the course. Above all, it’s a fun course, open to all, that engages and inspires people to grow and develop.
This will be the fourth CSLA Award to take place in Moray and achievements of candidates to date have included employment as a sports coach/assistant, the set up of volunteer after-school clubs, assistance in the move to further education and the development of confidence to lead groups in a variety of activities.
The course is divided into two parts. The tutored element is where candidates develop the skills mentioned previously and in particular communication, confidence and organisation. Once the tutored element is complete, candidates then have to put the skills learnt into practice by undertaking a minimum of 10 hours of voluntary leadership experience in the community; for example, by assisting in an after-school sports club, lunchtime sports sessions, or leading sessions at a local youth club, brownie/scout group. Each course takes approximately 25-30 hours to complete which excludes the voluntary experience.
