School children across Moray are being given increased opportunities to get active thanks to the work of volunteers. The Active Schools project started in October with the appointment of a team of co-ordinators tasked with increasing activity levels amongst school children by establishing links between schools and sports clubs, providing coaching opportunities and recruiting and training volunteers to work as activity leaders and assistants.
In April a group of parent volunteers from a number of Forres schools attended a Community TOPS training course and they are now being deployed on the town’s playgrounds and playing fields! Active Schools Co-ordinator Jo Kirkman said, “It’s great to see the project coming to life! Its success relies heavily on the support of volunteers. The lunchtime activity sessions that parents are running at Anderson’s, Applegrove, and Dallas Primary Schools are proving very popular, with both the pupils and the parents having great fun, and everyone getting half an hour of exercise that they might not otherwise have had”.
Anyone interested in volunteering as an Activity Leader or assistant should contact John McMulkin, Active Schools Manager, on 01343 557145.
