Fochabers Cricket Ground - 2nd June 2005, 9.45am – 2.45pm
Did you know that cricket is the second most popular team sport in Scotland? The children in Moray do, because 19 Primary Schools are sending teams to the Kwik Cricket Festival on Thursday 2nd June at Fochabers Cricket Club Ground.
Over the past few months, the Cricket Development Officer has been working hard, coaching school teams with the help of the local Cricket Club Coaches and the Active Schools Co-ordinators. The results will be seen on the 2nd June when 210 children will be playing throughout the day for fun, for health and to try and represent Moray at the Scottish final in Stirling in July.
Competition will be fierce. Mosstodloch have won this event for 4 of the 5 previous years, but with so many schools entering this year, who can say what talent will be uncovered!
Cricket Scotland will be supporting the event by sending 3 of the current national cricket team, Scottish Saltires, fresh from their excellent win over Warwickshire last Saturday. Craig Wright, the Saltires Captain, will be attending with Fraser Watt and Dewald Nel - Craig being no stranger to Moray having coached here in the past.
Roddy Smith, Chief Executive of Cricket Scotland said, “The future for cricket in Moray is very bright, with good junior development in most of the cricket clubs. Hopefully, a good few of the youngsters playing on Thursday will go on to join their local club and enjoy playing in the junior league structure developed by the Moray Cricket Association. We already have a few promising young cricketers from this area training with our national squads”.
The Festival is supported by sportMoray, who will be presenting the shield to the winning team and Moray Cricket Association, who have helped to fund the transport.
