Bogus Fax Directory Warning
Date -30 May 2005 Return to previous page

Moray Council Trading Standards are warning businesses to be on the lookout for bogus correspondence made up to look like invoices.  The ‘invoices’ are for over £400 and purport to give entry in a fax directory.  Trading Standards have received 7 complaints about the offer in 2 days.

Peter Adamson, Trading Standards Manager commented, “The paperwork is similar to an invoice and could easily trick a busy business into paying for something they don’t want.  The sender has a London address, however, enquiries have shown that the forms come from South Africa”.

The small print shows that the paperwork is not a bill, but a ‘solicitation’ for entry to a trade directory.  Enquiries are ongoing with other Trading Standards Services and the Office of Fair Trading to establish the legitimacy of the company involved.

Information regarding this or other enquiries regarding business directories can be forwarded to Trading Standards, 232 High Street, Elgin, Tel No:  01343 554617.
