A fun event will take place at Elgin Academy on Wednesday 22nd June 2005, as part of an ongoing programme to prepare primary seven pupils for their move to the secondary school in August.
For many years, staff from the secondary school have worked with their colleagues in the primary schools to form the Elgin Academy Associated Schools Group (ASG), to help prepare youngsters for the move to secondary school.
Guidance staff from the Academy meet with the pupils in the primary schools, the pupils visit the Academy and there is an information evening for parents, to help them prepare their children for the move.
Following the success of last year’s event, ‘Big Fish – Little Fish’ is being organised in addition to the existing programme, to give pupils the opportunity to meet their future classmates in less formal circumstances than the traditional visits to the Academy.
Pupils from Bishopmill, East End, Seafield, St Sylvester’s and West End Primary Schools will either walk or be transported to Elgin Academy for a morning of fun activities designed to boost confidence, self esteem and allay fears about the move to secondary school.
The morning will start with a programme of activities designed to encourage pupils from different schools to get to know each other, and after a break for snack, there will be a ‘Wacky Workout’ organised with Youth Sports Development Worker Kim Paterson.
Elgin Academy Active Schools Co-ordinator, Louise Jamieson said, “The Elgin Academy Local Community Network and Active Schools Co-ordinators are working together with the school staff to organise this event in support of the smooth transition of over 200 primary 7 pupils to Elgin Academy. We are very grateful to Tesco who have generously supplied healthy snacks and water for the children”.
To round off the day, primary 7 pupils are invited to dance the evening away at a free disco, which will run from 7-9pm at Elgin Academy.
