Date -01 Dec 2005 Return to previous page

Could you help make a real difference in someone’s life?
Are you friendly and approachable?
Are you confident with your own reading, writing and number work?
Do you have 2 hours to spare a week?
Would you like to gain a qualification at the same time?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then why not consider becoming a Volunteer Tutor with the Community Learning and Development’s Essential Skills service.

The literacy skills we left school with need continual upgrading to meet the everyday demands put on them in this rapidly changing world that we live in today.

The Essential Skills service provides free help to any adult who wants to improve or upgrade their skills in reading, writing, number work and basic information technology.

This may be so that they can –

·        fill in application forms or write CVs
·        look for a better job
·        take that promotion at work -which may involve writing reports/letters
·        help their children with reading/numbers
·        brush up their skills before going on a college course or working towards qualifications
·        take the theory-driving test…….. Or  whatever else they may need to move on in their lives.

Some comments from Adult Literacy Learners in Moray who have used the service and benefited from the support given by volunteer tutors are as follows:

“The support I’ve had has made me feel more confident about going shopping, knowing if I’m getting the right change and if offers are really saving me money.  I’m also better at budgeting my money now”.

“I started adult literacy classes and made great progress.  Now I am going to college to study communications.  I hope to carry on learning and improve further. “

“I don’t feel embarrassed any more as I can now help my daughter who is learning to read at school and don’t have to tell her to ask her mummy to help her”..
