Forres has been named as best medium town in the Beautiful Scotland awards announced today (Wednesday), completing a hat trick of prizes for Moray.
Judges praised the town’s imaginative floral displays and additional sculptures in Grant Park, in particular the replica of a RAF Nimrod set in a roundel flowerbed.
Duffus was voted the best small village in Scotland, and earned praise from judges for their commitment to an all-year-round programme that enhanced the area.
Moray Council won the Scottish Centre Trophy for environmental cleanliness, with judges particularly impressed with the lack of litter and dog fouling, and the high standard of care afforded to the local environment.
Convener for Moray Council, Cllr George McIntyre, said the three awards prove that Moray remains a community showcase.
“Obviously I am delighted for all those concerned,” he said.
“It is very tough competing in this sort of competition at national level.
“However, whether a town or village wins or not, many people reap the benefit of an improved environment, all made possible by a dedicated band of volunteers committed to their local area.
“I congratulate everyone across the Moray for their fantastic efforts this year.”
Other councillors were unanimous in their praise of effort made by everyone involved to secure the awards.
Forres councillor, Ian Young said: “There has been an enormous amount of teamwork put in by everyone,” he said.
“The result has been one of the most spectacular displays I have seen in Grant Park, and I wish to thank everyone for all their hard work.
“Something like this really puts Forres on the map, and continues to attract visitors year on year.”
Cllr Lee Bell agreed.
He highlighted the judges’ comments on community involvement as the winning element of the award, in particular the town’s younger people.
“The judges have praised the involvement of pupils from Pilmuir and Applegrove primary schools; these youngsters have been inspired and encouraged to become gardeners and should ensure that the Forres success story continues.
“Similarly, the apprentices from Varis Engineering - who gave up their own time to construct the Nimrod replica - show a great sense of community spirit.”
Cllr Jeff Hamilton added his congratulation to all concerned.
“Bringing everyone together to achieve these awards, particularly the young people in the primary schools, has a fantastic ripple effect on the area,” he said.
“We all benefit from the efforts of a dedicated band of volunteers and experienced parks staff.
“I say well done to them all.”
