Moray Council convener George McIntyre has welcomed assurances from Scottish environment minister Mike Russell on Moray’s package of flood alleviation schemes.

The minister gave a guarantee that none of the schemes being brought forward by the council would suffer as a result of changes in legislation and procedures on flood alleviation.

Mr Russell visited Elgin today to meet councillors and officials to discuss the council’s proposals for schemes to alleviate flooding in Elgin, Forres and Rothes, all of which have suffered devastating floods in recent years.

The schemes, which are likely to cost a total of £150million, will protect hundreds of homes and business premises.

Councillor McIntyre described the meeting, during which the minister was given a presentation on each of the flood schemes, as extremely positive and encouraging.

“The minister was able to assure us that none of our schemes would suffer as a result of any changes that are introduced,” said the convener.

“They are well advanced in terms of preparation and will be supported by the Scottish Government.

“That was great news for elected members and the Moray public and we were very heartened by everything the minister had to say. We very much appreciated the fact that he took time out to come and meet with us.”
