CCTV cameras set to roll
Date -19 Dec 2007 Return to previous page

The first images from Keith’s new CCTV system should be beamed to the control room in Elgin by the end of this week.

They will be followed within the next week or two by the first pictures from the new CCTV cameras being installed in Lossiemouth.

The systems, costing £230,000 in total, will bring to five the number of communities in Moray served by CCTV.

CCTV cameras have been in operation in Elgin, Buckie and Forres town centres since the mid-1990s and have played an important role in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and in making the streets safer for the public.

Only two or three of the six Keith cameras will be up and running initially as some power supplies have still to be connected, but the entire system is expected to be operational early in the New Year.

It is likely to be late December or early January before the first live images from Lossiemouth are transmitted to the control suite at Elgin police station where the cameras are monitored round-the-clock by operators. As with Keith, all six cameras which are being installed in Lossiemouth will be fully operational early in the New Year.

The chairman of Moray Council’s CCTV working party, Councillor Douglas Ross, said: “We are encouraged that after some delays the images from the cameras in Keith and Lossiemouth will soon be displayed in the CCTV suite in Elgin.

“The plans have taken some time to come to fruition but hopefully in the near future residents of Keith and Lossiemouth can feel a bit safer in their communities knowing the cameras are operational.”

The working party meets quarterly and will continue to review how CCTV systems are deployed in public spaces throughout Moray.
