Harbour environmental improvements
Date -24 Jan 2008 Return to previous page

Work has been completed on environmental improvements at Burghead harbour’s north quay.

The improvements are aimed at enhancing the image of the historic harbour and linking recent improvements at the foreshore with the nearby headland to attract more tourists to the town.

The project has created a high quality promenade-style streetscape including natural paving, lighting and seating.

It is one of a series of improvement projects at Moray Council-owned harbours with the aim of making them more attractive for recreational sailing and boosting Moray’s reputation with visitors.

The project has been funded by Moray Council, HIE Moray and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and designed by Forres-based LDN Architects.

Local councillor Eric McGillivray, who has been involved with the project from its early stages, said: “These improvements are very welcome and will prove a great asset to Burghead.

“They will help to make the area much more attractive for tourists and locals and perhaps kick-start both environmental and commercial development.”

Early preparatory work is also under way at Hopeman harbour where it is planned to install an all-abilities pontoon system, with the funding again coming from Moray Council, HIE Moray and the ERDF.
