Approval for new council payments scheme
Date -30 Jan 2008 Return to previous page

Moray Council today approved new and more flexible cash collection arrangements which will result in efficiency savings of £100,000

People paying council tax, rent and other council bills will be able to do so at more than 70 outlets throughout Moray.

Outlets will be located in towns and villages and will include shops, convenience stores, newsagents, petrol stations and post offices.

They will replace the council’s own existing payments offices.

Many of the outlets will have longer opening hours, including weekends, which will make it much more convenient for the thousands of people who make payments to the council.

The new arrangements, which will come into effect at the beginning of April, were approved by councillors following extensive public consultation.

Around 70% of people said that using local shops would make paying bills easier and that the longer opening hours would be a benefit.

Twelve per cent of people who responded to the consultation said the changes would cause them difficulty and measures will be put in place to support those with concerns.

As well as reducing collection costs for the council, the move will help to support local businesses and post offices across Moray.

The council has accepted a tender for the Co-operative Bank to provide the income collection service.
