Go-ahead for new Elgin bridge
Date -31 Jan 2008 Return to previous page

A new bridge to carry traffic over the Aberdeen-Inverness railway line at Reiket Lane in Elgin has been approved by members of Moray Council's environmental services committee.

Work is expected to begin in June and should take around six months to complete.

The two-lane bridge will replace the existing narrow single-lane humpback bridge which is controlled by traffic lights. The new bridge will also incorporate a cycleway.

A temporary footbridge will be put in place during the construction period.

The development was welcomed by two Elgin councillors who sit on the committee.

Councillor Graham Leadbitter said the overall benefits of the new bridge would be “quite significant” for the New Elgin area and for Elgin as a whole, while Councillor John Russell said: “This is a welcome development which is sorely needed as a contributor towards easing Elgin’s traffic management problems.”

A report to the committee said the bridge improvement had been identified in the Moray Local Plan and formed part of a strategy to ease traffic circulation in the New Elgin area.

The bridge improvement was linked to ongoing housing development in Elgin South and any hold-up would constrain and delay that development.

The report said: “The six month construction period will disrupt traffic movements in and around New Elgin and the (council's) transportation manager has advised that arrangements to manage traffic on the local road network, including public transport, will be addressed separately.”
