An event which will show school pupils how to enjoy a night out in a drug and alcohol-free environment is to be staged at an Elgin nightclub later this month.
The information disco at Joanna’s has been organised by the Moray Community Safety Partnership as part of the Scottish Government’s Safer Streets campaign.
Second and third-year pupils from all secondary schools in Moray will be entertained by two live bands and the resident DJ and there will also be an inter-active quiz based on information on display from Grampian Police, Grampian Fire and Rescue Service and NHS Grampian.
Soft drinks will be provided by sponsors and non-alcoholic cocktails will be available courtesy of Health Promotions.
Similar events have been run successfully in the past and have provided an opportunity for young people to understand the concept of having a good time without the need for alcohol or drugs.
Youth workers will also be on hand for youngsters to chat with should they wish to do so.
Moray Council anti-social behaviour co-ordinator Andy Jamieson said the community safety partnership was delighted to be hosting the event.
“It provides the young people with an ideal opportunity to have a fun experience while delivering an important message on the sensible use of alcohol,” he said.
Grant McCutcheon, partnership development officer for Grampian Police, said: “We are really pleased to be able to put on an event like this in association with Joanna’s and their suppliers.
“We hear a lot about our drinking culture and its physical, social and economic consequences. Sadly, in Moray we suffer from the effects of that culturally ingrained behaviour in exactly the same way as many other towns and cities across Scotland.
“What we hope this event will demonstrate to our young people is that you can spend time in licensed premises and enjoy the music, the atmosphere and the company without having to be drunk.
“Having a good night out, behaving in a socially responsible manner and looking after yourself and your friends are all perfectly compatible and I hope the young people who attend have a memorable time for all the right reasons.”
Tickets for the disco on Thursday, March 20 will be distributed through schools and escorted transport to and from the event will be provided by Moray Council from all secondaries outwith Elgin.
