Pupils at an Elgin primary school are to get a lesson in washing their hands later this week.
Children at Seafield Primary will take part in a series of interactive workshops aimed at raising awareness of good hand hygiene.
The workshops will be run by a team of NHS Grampian health improvement staff and school nurse Mark Swinglehurst as part of a local initiative taking place at the same time as a national hand hygiene campaign launched by Health Protection Scotland.
The aim of the campaign, and Thursday’s workshops, is to bring about a change in the culture surrounding hand washing.
During the workshops pupils will have an opportunity to see the Glitter Bug Box in use. When used with a specially formulated hand cream, it shows up ‘bacteria’ and ‘germs’ which glitter under an ultraviolet light.
The workshops will focus on the hows, whens and whys of hand washing.
Seafield head teacher Kenneth Skelton said: “It is vitally important to raise awareness of correct hand washing among children.
“The delivery of these workshops presents the subject in a fun, interesting and educational way for children while underpinning the basic fundamentals of good hand hygiene.”
Pupils will each receive a leaflet produced for the National Hand Hygiene Campaign to take home. The leaflet shows how hands should be washed and also encourages parents to show their child how to wash hands correctly and to set a good example.
