Elgin to host Euro-development seminar
Date -19 Mar 2008 Return to previous page

A seminar will be held in Elgin next month to highlight a six-year programme designed to help develop the more remote areas of northern Europe.

The Northern Periphery Programme 2007-13 covers a vast area, including regions of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, Sweden and Finland and non-EU member states including Norway, Iceland and Greenland.

All the regions share common features such as harsh climate conditions, sparseness of population and remoteness.

The programme is funded by the EU to promote co-operation and encourage joint working on common issues and problems.

Transnational co-operation can provide excellent opportunities for finding new ways to address shared challenges and explore new opportunities.

Moray Council development officer Mairi McIntosh said the overall aim of the programme was to help peripheral and remote areas of Europe to develop their economic, social and environmental potential.

“The entire area of Moray is eligible for the first time within this new programme and it provides an excellent opportunity for addressing shared challenges, exploring new solutions and creating innovative new products and services with other countries.”

The seminar with take place in the Gallery at Elgin library on Monday, April 14 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and is open to all sectors, including public bodies, voluntary organisations, the private sector and educational establishments.

The event is free of charge but places should be booked by calling 01343 563347 by April 4. More information on the seminar is also available by calling 01343 563493 or 01343 563425.
