Moray Council has joined Waste Aware Scotland’s national home composting campaign to offer residents discounted compost bins.
The campaign, which will be launched next month, aims to get more households composting kitchen and garden waste.
The public will be able to order a wide range of compost bins through Waste Aware Scotland, rather than direct from the council, for as little as £6. All bins come with a free kitchen caddy and include free delivery.
Scotland produces around 900,000 tonnes of organic waste every year and home composting can help reduce this type of waste being sent to landfill.
Home composting also provides a free soil conditioner for gardens, helping the soil to retain moisture and improve plant growth.
Moray Council waste disposal officer Craig McIntosh said: “Many people don’t realise just how much of their waste can be composted.
“Fruit scraps, vegetable peelings, tea bags and grass cuttings can be composted as well as loo roll tubes, scrunched up newspaper, hedge clippings and much more.
“Composting is an effective way of reducing some of the waste we produce and turning it into a useful product for gardens, while also providing considerable benefits to the wider environment.”
Dr Nicki Souter, campaigns manager for Waste Aware Scotland, welcomed the Moray Council initiative.
“We are delighted that Moray Council has joined the campaign and is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to buy a compost bin.”
The campaign is a partnership between Waste Aware Scotland, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, the Scottish Government and Scottish local authorities.
Compost bins can be ordered via the Waste Aware Scotland website www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk or by calling 0845 077 0756.
People are reminded that bins are no longer available directly from Moray Council.
