A new purpose-built recycling centre will open to the public in Elgin on Monday, March 31.
The £260,000 centre at Chanonry will replace the existing civic amenity site at the nearby Moycroft waste treatment centre.
It will offer the same range of containers for recyclable materials – including paper, cardboard, timber, glass, cans, textiles, green waste, soil and rubble – as well as household and bulky waste.
The new facility will free up much-needed space at the Moycroft site for expansion of the handling of the various waste streams and allow greater flexibility in carrying out operations.
It has the added advantage of enabling the public to recycle materials away from the presence of refuse and cleansing HGVs that require to use the Moycroft site.
In the interests of safety, a one-way traffic system will be in operation at the new site, with entry off Chanonry Road South. The site will be manned by an attendant who can advise anyone unsure of the new layout.
Monday will also see the introduction at Chanonry, as well as the recycling centres at Forres, Buckie and Keith, of containers for plastic bottles such as drinks bottles, plastic milk cartons, shampoo and detergent bottles.
The containers will carry signs advising which types of bottles should be deposited for recycling.
Moray Council waste management officer Steve Williamson said: “Given the wide range of plastic types, we have concentrated on these plastic containers because, unlike other plastic materials, there are readily available recycling and reprocessing outlets available.
“Bottles will be taken to our main treatment centre at Moycroft and baled before being taken for reprocessing through one of our established recycling contractors.
“This has been the subject of trials for the last three months at our Elgin and Forres sites to assess volumes and handling options.
“From the results of the trials we expect these facilities to be well used and supported by the public.”
Councillor John Russell, joint chairman of Moray Council’s environmental services committee, said the new recycling centre was a much improved facility which he was sure people would find very user friendly.
“The public in Moray has a record in recycling that is bettered by only one other Scottish local authority and I am confident that this new centre will play its part in improving that record even further,” said Councillor Russell.
“In particular, I am sure that the introduction of plastic recycling, not only here in Elgin but also at the three other locations in Moray, will prove very popular.
“Recycling plastic items such as bottles and milk cartons is in the early stages of development but it is good to know that Moray Council is helping to lead the way by providing the necessary facilities.”
The centre will be open Monday to Saturday 8am to 4pm and on Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
