‘Messy’ family event to be repeated
Date -25 Jul 2008 Return to previous page

A family event which allowed parents and children to develop new skills together has proved so successful it is to be repeated next week.

Sixteen adults and 31 children from the Pinefield area of Elgin attended a family 'messy time' at Pinetree House earlier this week.

The event was staged by Moray Council's Elgin community learning and development team in response to local families' frustration at the lack of affordable facilities in their area.

Community learning and development workers responded by offering free family arts and crafts sessions aimed at those lacking the confidence or skills to access other forms of family learning provision in Elgin.

The initiative proved hugely popular and mums, dads and children took the opportunity to try out new arts and crafts as a family unit.

It also gave them the opportunity to socialise with other families from the Pinefield area over bacon rolls and drinks.

As a result a second family ' messy time' has been arranged at the same venue for next Tuesday (July 29) from 10.30am until 12 noon.

"These are informal family-based activities which are on the community's doorstep and free of charge, " said community learning and development worker Denise Gormley.

"They provide families with the chance to socialise and to learn and develop their skills as a family in a relaxed and supported environment.

"Parents and carers will be supported to work as a family during the activities with the aim of giving them the confidence to try out these and similar activities back home with their children.

"Should families identify that they want to develop their learning further, the adult learning workers will support them in doing that."
