Householders in Moray are being urged to claim council tax benefit to which they may be entitled.
According to the Department of Works and Pensions, the take-up of council tax benefit is lower than any other state benefit, with as much as £1billion unclaimed in the UK every year.
Now Moray Council has launched a leaflet campaign encouraging claimants to come forward.
A spokesman for the council’s benefits services said: “As the credit crunch hits, it is essential that people who are struggling to make ends meet get any help they are entitled to.
“Council tax benefit is there to help people on low incomes and we aim to spread the word so that people are aware of its availability.
“We would urge people to make their claim for council tax benefit as soon as possible. If in doubt, they should apply now.”
Research has shown that a perception of complicated form-filling and claim processes are a contributory factor in the low uptake.
However, in reality claiming council tax benefit is quite straightforward and help is on hand from the council’s benefits staff.
Assistance can be given over the telephone or by calling person at the council’s offices in Elgin, Buckie, Forres and Keith.
Anyone who pays council tax and lives in the property can claim whether they are working, unemployed, retired, in receipt of income support or any other benefits from the DWP.
The amount of any benefit granted will depend on the claimant’s income and capital, personal circumstances, other adults occupying the property and the amount of council tax which the claimant is liable to pay.
Leaflets will be circulated widely and will be available in libraries, community centres and other public buildings.
