In less than 15 years, the internet has fundamentally altered the world we live in.
At the beginning of the 1990s few people had access to the internet and it had little relevance to the vast majority.
Now it is used daily for study, research, shopping, communicating with family and friends, social networking, playing games and much more.
With the security issues that this increasing use brings, internet safety has been developed in collaboration with a number of external partners, including BT, Microsoft and the police.
The new course is designed to give learners the knowledge to recognise and deal with the safety and security issues that they may come across in using the internet.
As long as the right precautions are taken, the internet can be made safe.
The syllabus includes computer viruses, firewalls, identify theft, password protection, e-mail encryption, content filtering, the internet and the law and cyberbullying.
The course is accredited by the SQA and the assessment takes the form of keeping a log of your learning and a short online assessment of 25 multiple choice questions.
The course costs £110 and should take no more than 30 hours of study. It will be available at various times to suit individual needs and an SQA qualification will be awarded on satisfactory completion.
