An initiative to get more girls involved in football is about to kick off in the Buckie area.
The North Region Girls’ Football League will be working in partnership with Active Schools to develop girls’ football at primary school level.
The first in a series of programmes and events will be a girls-only soccer festival to be played on Buckie’s new synthetic pitch on Sunday (March 22) from 10am to 1pm, with players in the P5 to P7 age group invited to take part.
“This festival is the beginning of a series of events designed to develop girls’ football in the area,” said girls’ and young women’s football development officer Finella Annand.
“All primary schools in the Buckie area will be given the opportunity to have regular girls’ football sessions after school in the lead-up to two more festivals. The initiative will culminate with a primary schools tournament towards the end of term.”
The initial aim is to give girls the opportunity to play and develop their skills and in the longer term it is hoped to form a girls’ football club in Buckie for those keen to take their involvement further.Success will depend on the help and support of volunteers, parents and coaches and anyone who would like to offer assistance should contact Finella Annand on 07891 123406 or Buckie-based Active Schools co-ordinator Hein Mijzen on 07966 120516.
