Second girls' football festival

Date Added - 08/05/09

A second football festival for primary schoolgirls in the Buckie area is to take place next week.

It will be held at Portessie Primary School on Wednesday, May 13 from 4pm to 6pm and follows the success of the inaugural festival which saw more than 40 girls participate.

Since the first event girls’ football has been offered to every primary school in the Buckie area with the exception of St Peter’s where pupil numbers are smaller.

Moray Council’s Active Schools and the North Region Girls’ Football League (NRGFL) are keen to maximise the opportunity for girls to play football at primary level and are hoping their efforts will be rewarded with another good turnout at the second of the four festivals that are planned.

The eventual aim is to create a football club in the Buckie area so that all girls leaving primary school have a pathway to enable them to continue their involvement in the game.

The potential for a club exists in the area, with the number of girls playing football continuing to rise steadily.

“Girls’ football is really taking off in Buckie,” said Finella Annand, of the NRGFL. “With the help of Hein Mijzen, the local Active Schools co-ordinator, our aim is to start a club in Buckie so that all these girls have somewhere to continue playing.

“In order to make this work we will need the support of both parents and volunteers and we look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to be involved.”

Anyone who would like to help out should contact Finella Annand on 07891 123406 or Hein Mijzen on 07966 120516.
