Council Denies Dogs Claims

Date Added - 07/07/09

Moray Council has denied claims that it was alerted to the danger posed by two dogs in an Elgin housing scheme where a man died after intervening as they mauled another dog.

A newspaper report quoted local residents as saying they had made repeated complaints to the council and Grampian Police about the Staffordshire bull terriers and claiming that no action had been taken.

A local man collapsed and died last Thursday evening shortly after he and other neighbours intervened as the terriers attacked and injured a spaniel.

A Moray Council spokesman said an investigation had been carried out in response to the residents’ allegations.

He said: "Extensive inquiries have taken place within the council and it has been established that our records do not contain a single complaint about the dogs from anyone living in or near the area where the incident took place.

"The council takes its responsibilities very seriously and we were concerned when these allegations were made and published.

"If residents complained about the dogs in question, it was not to us.

"In the meantime, our condolences go to the family of the gentleman who died."
