Conservation Area Plan for Burghead

Date Added - 05/08/09

Moray councillors have agreed to carry out a consultation exercise with a view to giving Burghead conservation area status.

The historic coastal town was once a Pictish settlement and its headland is an important archaeological site.

It is proposed that the conservation area take in more than half of the town, stretching from the headland to Park Street.

Moray Council's planning and regulatory services committee agreed to accept the conservation area proposal, subject to consultation, following an appraisal by a specialist conservation officer.

A report to the committee said the appraisal concluded that conservation area status would be beneficial to the long-term preservation of the north quay and headland area given its historical and architectural merits.

"Such a designation would also provide more opportunities for funding to enhance Burghead's economic and tourism potential," said the report.

Councillors agreed to a six-week consultation with relevant stakeholders, agencies such as Historic Scotland and local community groups.

Members of the public will also be encouraged to give their views and it is hoped to arrange a drop-in event where the proposals can be viewed.
