‘Out of this world’ art

Date Added - 17/08/09

Moray Council’s cultural co-ordinator team has launched a schools art competition that has the potential to be out of this world.

Working with a range of partners during the last school session, the team supported the development of a visual art resource box for every primary school in Moray.

Now the team is looking for the school that is using the Gallery In A Box in the most creative way.

Cultural co-ordinator manager Claire Wright said Gallery In A Box was about improving visual arts education across primary schools.

She said: “It contains not only art materials but also a whole range of practical suggestions and ideas for using visual art to support teaching across the curriculum.

“Schools can take inspiration for the competition from the Gallery In A Box itself but can also look at the work they already have planned for August and September.

“The United Nations and UNESCO declared 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibres, the International Year of Reconciliation and the International Year of Astronomy, so the potential for cross-curricular working is vast.

“We are really excited about the artwork that is going to be produced. In response to 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, I am quite sure some of the artwork will be out of this world.”

Schools will be sent guidelines on the competition at the beginning of term and the winning school will host a practical art workshop with the National Galleries of Scotland schools education officer Joanne Mawdsley in October and a day’s visit from the Travelling Gallery in November.
