Moray councillors today unanimously rejected a developer’s bid to buy Common Good land in Forres for a retail park.
Aberdeen-based Redco Milne had wanted the land at Bogton Road to build a supermarket and retail units.
The move met with strong opposition in Forres where a public consultation by Moray Council earlier this year found that 70% of residents who responded were against the proposal.
Councillors had delayed a decision pending the completion of the new Moray Economic Strategy commissioned following the closure announcement on RAF Kinloss.
But today the council’s policy and resources committee turned down the Redco Milne bid in the face of local opposition.
All four Forres ward members intimated that they were opposed to the sale of the land, with Councillor Lee Bell moving that the bid be rejected.
