Help needed for autism awareness training

People with autism are being encouraged to share their experiences to help provide an insight into what everyday life is like for those with the condition.

A recruitment drive has been launched to encourage adults with autism, high functioning autism and Asperger’s to come forward and be involved in the development of an autism awareness training programme for Moray.

Most people will have heard of autism but the majority do not currently have enough knowledge or understanding to think beyond stereotypes.

Comments made by the public during consultation for the Moray Autism Strategy 2011-14 highlighted a need for increased awareness and understanding of autism not just among the general public but among the professionals who come into contact with individuals with autism.

This lack of understanding can put additional pressures on people with autism in already stressful situations, leading to frustration and causing isolation.

Moray Council was successful in gaining funding from the Scottish Government’s autism strategy fund to increase awareness and better understanding of autism across a range of public services.

Staff will support people with autism to develop and deliver a training programme.

An initial informal meeting to discuss the project will be held in Elgin Community Centre on Wednesday, June 27 from 4pm to 7pm. Refreshments will be provided.
