FOI Request - Food Waste Collection

Request 101003826307

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I am writing to request the following information regarding household food waste collected during the summer months:

1. The total weight (in tonnes) of household food waste collected in June, July, and August for each of the past three years (2022, 2023, and 2024 if available). Please break this down by month and year.

2. Does your council collect food waste separately from general waste, or is it collected alongside general waste? If the approach has changed over the three-year period, please indicate the relevant collection method by year.

3. Have any internal records, reports, or campaigns noted a seasonal increase in food waste during the summer months, or highlighted barbecues as a contributing factor?

4. If recorded, can you provide a breakdown of the most commonly discarded food types during the summer months (e.g. meat, salad, bread, other perishables)?

Response 15-08-2025

1. We collect our food waste co-mingled in one bin alongside garden waste (if a permit has been purchased to add the garden waste). Therefore, the tonnage is for food and green waste combined.

Year June July August Total
2022 943.04 817.9 753.16 2514.1
2023 976.94 791.82 945.8 2714.56
2024 654.94 840.37 882.02 2377.33

2. Each domestic property has a bin for food waste. If they purchase a garden waste permit they can add garden waste into the bin. The food /green waste collection is a fortnightly collection, totally separate from general waste.

3. Not held. No reports have looked at this. Information that is not held falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information not held.
