Sustrans Community Links Programme 2014/15 & 2015/16

The Council is seeking feedback on ideas to apply for funding for a new east-west cycleway through Elgin.

The Sustrans Community Links Programme is a grant scheme to provide funding for the creation of cycling networks for everyday journeys.

Objectives of the Community Link Programme:

  • Link the places people live in with the places they want to get to
  • Encourage people to cycle or use another active mode on everyday journeys and increase cycling modal share
  • Meet an identified community need and demand.

The Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme, which opens up a corridor from the west end of Elgin towards Lhanbryde, offers potential for cycling and walking facilities remote from the A96, but linking to key destinations and other cycling and walking routes.

The indicative route has been selected to utilise opportunities, to minimise costs and maximise benefits through synergies with the Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme. It provides connectivity to key destinations and other cycling and walking routes so that cycling and walking become credible and attractive alternatives to cars.

The idea is to utilise, wherever possible, the new flood embankments, existing paths, as well as roads through the Cooper Park. The result would be a high quality, scenic  and user friendly route through Elgin whilst providing links to various locations.
