FOI Request - Redco Milne
It has come to my attention from your website that since 2008 Redco Milne has received a business rates rebate on 'the old Tesco' site at the bottom of Gordon
St/Forres amounting to £1.4M.
I understand that a rebate is normal policy to encourage the sale or lease of a property but I fail to understand the logic in this case given that Redco Milne are
not actively marketing the property since they do not want to sell or lease it.
My FOI enquiry is therefore: WHY HAS REDCO MILNE BEEN ALLOWED AND GIVEN A BUSINESS RATES REBATE SINCE 2008?
There is provision within existing legislation for vacant Non-Domestic premises with a rateable of £1,700 or more to receive an award of three months' exemption followed by 10% empty property relief in any empty period.
The premises at 15 Gordon Street, Forres, owned by Redco Milne Limited, satisfies these statutory criteria. The company, as ratepayer for an empty property, is therefore entitled to claim a reduction on the amount of rates payable, and the appropriate reduction awards have been deducted from its rates account in accordance with this legislation.
