During 1994, major refurbishment took place at the Town House in Cluny Square, where the Buckie library was also now situated, and the Maritime Museum was dismantled to make way for a new Anson Gallery. Here a selection of his paintings was on permanent display.
In 2006, it became clear that in order to safeguard the long term future of the paintings, a more radical approach was necessary. Many of the paintings date from the 1920s, and had been stored and displayed throughout their life in a variety of venues, not always very suitable for their preservation. A decision was taken therefore to close the permanent gallery, and at the same time a commitment was made to digitise the entire collection of paintings, drawings and sketches, including many that had never been displayed at all. This would allow the original works to be stored under stringently controlled conditions, while allowing more opportunities for access via the digitised images.
This work was completed and in February 2007, a catalogue of Peter Anson's paintings in the Moray Council's collection was completed.
This catalogue is available through Moray's Libraries, and copies are also located at the Museums Service in Forres. The catalogue can be borrowed, in CD format, from libraries and the Museums Service. It includes details on how copies of the paintings can be purchased for private use as well.
