Initially the post of Lord-Lieutenant was a military appointment and this remained so for several centuries. Much of Banffshire lies within the Moray Council boundary which has two major RAF bases and there are strong connections with Territorial and Cadet units.

Lord-Lieutenant's Certificates
A Lord-Lieutenant's Certificate for meritorious service may be awarded to members of the Territorial Army and other Volunteer Reserve Forces.

Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets
The Lord-Lieutenant may appoint young people from the Armed Services to serve for one year as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet. These are chosen in conjunction with the RFCA and are the star cadets in the various cadet forces. During their year as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet they will attend the Lord-Lieutenant on a wide range of his duties.
