Deaf Education Service
Our Deaf Education Service support children and young people with hearing loss.
We work with parents, carers, teachers and school staff to ensure the curriculum is delivered.
What do we do?
Provide information and practical support to promote the inclusion of deaf children into mainstream classrooms
Provide objective advice when decisions related to communication mode are being made
Support communication and language development for pupils with a hearing loss
Advise and support school staff on how to promote inclusion of deaf pupils
Monitor a child’s functional hearing and offer recommendations for accessing the curriculum
Provide support in the use of specialist resources to promote independence
Monitor pupil progress, attend review meetings and provide reports
Liaise with Audiology Departments in local hospitals as well as the Cochlear Implant Programme team in Kilmarnock
Work collaboratively with Speech and Language Therapy.
Support pupils involved in transition from primary to high school or from high school into further/higher education or employment
Liaise with other agencies, including the National Deaf Children’s Society and the North East Sensory Service.
Most of our referrals come from relevant professional following a clinical diagnosis of hearing loss.
