FOI Request - Deer Road Collision Data

Request 101002961865

We are undertaking a project [...] analysing deer vehicle collisions. A key source of information in previous projects has been STATS19 data.

We are making this Freedom of Information request to obtain STATS19 data on all road traffic collisions involving animals since 1 January 2018, particularly where the 'clear language description' field mentions “deer”, “stag”, “hind” or “fawn” (case insensitive).

The fields supplied for previous requests has included:

• Road number
• Date and time
• Location, either as an easting/northing, grid reference or another spatial format
• Whether people were injured (‘peopleinjy’)
• The numbers of fatal, serious and slight injuries (‘injnosfatal’, ‘injnosserious’ and ‘injnosslight’)
• 'Clear language description’

Please could you provide us with this information in Excel or csv format so that it can be included in our analysis?

We are aware that local authorities use several different systems to manage STATS19 data after receiving it from the Police, so hopefully this request is clear in the absence of instructions. We have sometimes seen the ‘clear language description’ field called ‘PIA_AccDes1' and it contains information such as “VEHICLE 001 TRAVELLING WEST AT LOCUS SWERVES TO AVOID DEER AND COLLIDES WITH GATE”.

Moray Council no longer receive details of incidents where there is no injury reported and have had only one injury accident during the period which specifically mentions a 'deer'.

This occurred in August 2019 on the A95 at 2330 where a motorcyclist struck a deer when coming round a bend. This resulted in injury, the extent of which is not recorded.

Details of accidents that did not result in injury falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information Not Held.

The extent of the injury sustained during the one accident recorded is not held, and falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information Not Held.
