FOI Request - ASN Support

Request 101003754126

1.  The number of pupils with a formal ASN diagnosis who are not currently receiving any additional support (e.g., specialist teachers, classroom assistants, or adapted learning resources).

2.  The number of ASN support staff in schools who lack formal qualifications in special education.

3.  The number of times schools have requested an ASN teacher or support worker but the request was denied, in each of the last five academic years.

Response 16-04-2025

1.  All children, regardless of formal diagnosis, are entitled to receive additional support when it is required.  This will look different for every child and will be dependent on their own needs at different times along their educational journey.

2. To answer the other questions, we would have to read through hundreds of staff files individually. This task would cost the Council in excess of £600 of staff time. In accordance with section 12 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (excessive cost), we are therefore unable to comply with this part of the request.

3.  Schools are allocated ASN support, in the form of teachers and PSAs at the beginning of the academic year.  This is adjusted where there is a significant change, either due to a new young person moving into their school or where there has been a significant change to a young person's life.
