FOI Request - Taxi Driver Dress Code
Request 101003899988
I am aware that several councils require taxi drivers operating in their area to adhere to an approved dress code as part of the conditions of their taxi licence. For instance some councils state drivers should be “clean and tidy in their person or clothing”. Some councils also have items of clothing that taxi drivers are banned from wearing, such as trainers, baseball caps, tracksuits, denim or cord jeans, t-shirts, football or sports shirts and polo shirts. Often, trading standards or other departments within the council will look to check that these standards are being adhered to and will issue warnings (either verbally or in writing) to taxi drivers who are deemed to have flouted the requirements. As such, can you tell me:
1. In EACH of the last two calendar years (2023 and 2024) and so far this calendar year (Jan 1 – 16 Dec 2025) how many taxi drivers have received a warning from the council as a result of being deemed to have failed to adhere to the council’s dress code for taxi drivers?
2. Please detail what requirements the council places on its taxi drivers in regard to their clothing? I.e. what is approved in terms of clothing and what is banned?

1. To obtain the information requested we would need to look into several hundred taxi driver records. This task would cost the Council in excess of £600 of staff time. In accordance with section 12 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (excessive cost), we are therefore unable to comply with this part of the request.
2. Please see a document detailing the Moray Council Taxi Driver dress code here.
