A kerbside collection of recyclable material is a method of collection whereby the resident sorts their domestic waste according to type of material. This is collected in the household in specially provided bins. The bins are then placed on the kerbside outside the property by the householder on a weekly basis.
From March through to November there will also be collection of food and garden waste using wheelie bins on a fortnightly basis.
Those with disabilities that may prevent them from depositing the boxes on the kerbside should contact the Recycling Team on 01343 557045 to make alternative arrangements.
Plastic is notoriously difficult to recycle. Problems include the many different kinds of plastic, such as drinks bottles and plastic cups, which need to be segregated, and also the fact that many different types of plastic are to be found on single items, such as bottles, and therefore also require segregation.
A list of items which can and cannot be recycled will be distributed to each participating household to clarify what should be deposited into the boxes.
More information can be obtained from the Moray Waste Aware Phone Line, and from the Waste Aware Guide
with its subsequent information leaflets delivered to each household. Information is also distributed throughout Moray at places such as local libraries, resource centres, civic buildings and community halls.
Once the material has been collected, it is baled and transported to various sites for processing. Find out about the waste journey for each material.
The Moray Council is bound by European and National targets, though the Moray Waste Strategy aims, amongst other things, to reduce Municipal Solid Waste by 1% each year through education and composting initiatives, achieve 40% participation rates in home composting by 2010, and recycle 25% of household waste by 2006.
There are eight Recycling Centres in Moray at Buckie, Cullen, Dallachy, Dufftown, Elgin, Forres, Keith and Lossiemouth. Although each site varies with regards to what it can receive, the following are materials that can be disposed of in Moray: cans, car batteries, garden waste, glass, paper and cardboard, rubble, scrap metal, textiles (clothing), used engine oil, white goods (fridges, freezers, etc), and wood. The boxes are 40 litres (the average wheelie bin is 240 litres).
Communal recycling bins will be provided for each block and reusable bags for each household with which they can collect and carry waste to the appropriate bin.
Kerbside collections will only be made available to settlements of over 500 households. Households outwith such areas are encouraged to make use of existing Recycling Points and Centres, and will be provided with free reusable bags to do so. For further details, please contact the Recycling Team
