Kerbside Recycling Scheme - FAQs

What are kerbside collections?

A kerbside collection of recyclable material is a method of collection whereby the resident sorts their domestic waste according to type of material.  This is collected in the household in specially provided bins.  The bins are then placed on the kerbside or nearest collection point outside the property by the householder on a fortnightly basis.

What do I do about waste from my kitchen and garden?

Kitchen and garden waste should be put in your brown bin for collection. The contents of the brown bins are sent to be made into compost, therefore only organic material should be put into the brown bins. For a full list of acceptable contents please view the What Goes Where? page.

I have disabilities that make participating in such a scheme a problem. Is there any way I can get assistance to take part in the scheme?

The Council provides Assisted Collections to those residents who are unable to place their bins and boxes at the kerbside for emptying.

Those who may qualify for an Assisted Collection will include the infirm and disabled either of a temporary or permanent nature who have no one to assist them.

A simple assessment is all that is required to provide this service.

If you think that you qualify for an Assisted Collection please contact us using the Contact Us details on the left.

Can I recycle foil, aerosol cans and food tins?

Yes. Clean tin foil sheets and trays can be recycled in your purple bin or nearest cans / plastic bank along with all aerosols and food tins. A full list of items which can and cannot be recycled can be view on the What Goes Where? page.

What happens to all the cans, glass bottles paper and card once it has been collected?

Everything collected in Moray for recycling is recycled. A full list of what happens to each waste stream can be found by viewing the page Find out about the waste journey  for each material.

I still have lots of other household items that I would like to recycle, how do I go about it?

The council is keen to help residents to recycle to the maximum and as well as providing a kerbside collection for recyclable waste, it provides a number of recycling centres and points.  These facilities can be used for those occasions (for example clearing out an attic or shed) where residents may find they have too much recyclable and/or residual waste and cannot wait until collection day.

To find your nearest recycling centre or point please view our Recycling Guide to find out what and where material can be recycled.

The Recycling Centres offer a wider range of facilities for disposing of your waste. You can view or download a copy of our Recycling Guide - Recycling Centres section  for locations, opening times and details on the range of materials that can be accepted along with the associated opening

I live in a block of flats and we have shared bins. Do we participate in kerbside collections?

Yes. Communal recycling bins will be provided for each block and reusable bags for each household with which they can collect and carry waste to the appropriate bin are available on request. Please contact us using the Contact Us details on the left to arrange delivery of these bags if you would like some.

I still have questions and would like to find out more about Kerbside collections
